The Third Commandment is:
"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain..." (Exodus 20:7, KJV)
Theologians have understood this commandment in several related ways. Here are ten of the most common interpretations:
1. Profanity or cursing with God's name This is the most familiar interpretation: using God's name as a swear word or in an irreverent way.
2. Making false oaths Using God's name to guarantee something that is untrue. For example, saying, "I swear to God," while lying or intending to deceive.
3. Breaking vows made to God Making promises to God and then deliberately failing to keep them without repentance.
4. Claiming God said something He did not Saying, "God told me..." or "God wants you to..." when He has not actually spoken. Many theologians see this as a serious misuse of God's name.
5. Using God's name to manipulate others Invoking God's authority to pressure, intimidate, or control people for personal gain.
6. Hypocrisy: Calling yourself a follower of God while deliberately living in a way that dishonors Him. Since God's people bear His name, their actions reflect on Him.
7. Treating God casually or disrespectfully Using God's name as a meaningless expression ("Oh my God") or speaking of Him without reverence.
8. False teaching: Teaching error while claiming to represent God or Scripture faithfully. This takes God's name in vain because it misrepresents Him.
9. Using religion for personal gain Exploiting God's name for money, fame, political power, or influence rather than serving Him sincerely.
10. Bearing God's name without honoring Him Some scholars note that the Hebrew verb can also mean "carry" or "bear." In this view, the commandment warns God's covenant people not to bear His name "in vain" by representing Him falsely through their lives.
Many biblical scholars believe the commandment is broader than simply avoiding profanity. It calls believers to treat God's name, character, authority, and reputation with reverence in their speech, worship, promises, teaching, and daily lives.
Jesus also emphasized this principle when He taught His disciples to pray, "Hallowed be thy name" (Matthew 6:9, KJV), meaning God's name should be honored as holy.
